Through the Utah Tour Guide Association’s Basic Tour Guide Training, learn what it means to be a tour guide. Hone skills, learn about the industry, and gain an understanding of how to lead a tour. The training course has two possible formats: one option is two whole days, the other is five 2-hour evening classes with a sixth half-day for the practical tour experiences. Both options cover the same basic skills training including:

- Basic responsibilities of tour guides
- Types of guides and tours
- Research & Resources
- Identifying good reliable resources
- How to research and use factual information
- Communication & Interpretation
- Basics of communication including verbal and non-verbal communication
- How to tell stories and share information in transformative way
- Flexibility
- What do you do when it doesn’t go as planned
- Ethics & Standards
- Industry ethics and standards
- Leave No Trace / Tread Lightly
- Proper permits, licenses, permissions
- Tour Planning & Follow up
- Communication between guides and employers
- Guide and tour pricing
- How to set-up and design a basic tour
- Utah Certified Tour Guide program introduction

The two-day training also includes a demonstration tour with an experienced Utah Certified Tour Guide. Students will also have a practical tour experience as they prepare for and give part of a walking tour and step-on tour for the class.

Who can participate in the UTGA Basic Tour Guide Training?
Anyone. This training is a great introduction to the profession and a great way to gain basic skills for any tour guide whether they be a professional, docent, volunteer, over-the-road, step-on, driver/guide, walking, or other type of tour guide.
Why should I take this training?
This training offers basic skills and understanding necessary to be a tour guide. It will also connect you to other guides in Utah offering networking and social opportunities. Additionally, this training is required toward becoming a Certified Utah Tour Guide.
